Trump and Zelenskiy Meet as G7 Tests Russia Pressure
Ukraine moved back to the center of the G7 summit as President Donald Trump met Volodymyr Zelenskiy, while allies pushed for more sanctions on Moscow and tried to judge whether Washington’s new Iran framework can hold.
The second day of the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains turned on two linked tests of American diplomacy. Trump called for Russia to make a deal with Ukraine after what he described as a very good meeting with Zelenskiy, but he offered few specifics on new U.S. pressure against Moscow. European leaders, meanwhile, urged Washington to match peace talk with firmer sanctions, air defence and a clearer warning to Vladimir Putin.
The Iran file remained equally unsettled. Trump said a memorandum with Tehran states clearly that Iran will not have a nuclear weapon and said he was open to congressional review, but allies continued to question the details, timing and enforcement of a wider agreement. The summit’s larger story was a familiar one: leaders welcomed diplomatic openings, then immediately asked whether they are strong enough to survive contact with war, markets and mistrust.
