Iran Hits Gulf Bases As War Fears Surge

Iran’s drone and missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, followed by new U.S. strikes on Iranian targets, pushed a fragile ceasefire toward collapse and put the Gulf at the center of the day’s global crisis.

The Middle East crisis widened Sunday after Iran targeted Gulf states that host U.S. military facilities, while Washington said it carried out further strikes on Iranian military and surveillance infrastructure. Bahrain and Kuwait reported intercepted attacks and limited damage, but the symbolism was enormous: the war had moved directly onto the doorstep of U.S. allies in the Gulf.

AP reported that Tehran threatened to halt talks aimed at ending the conflict, while Reuters said Gulf markets turned mixed as investors absorbed the risk of a broader confrontation. The latest escalation followed attacks on commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz, keeping energy markets, diplomacy and regional security on edge.

Why It Matters

June 28 was defined by escalation. The U.S.-Iran ceasefire already looked fragile, but attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait turned a regional conflict into a direct test for Gulf allies, energy shipping and diplomacy. The Strait of Hormuz remained the hinge between battlefield events and global economic anxiety.

At the same time, the climate story refused to recede. Europe’s heatwave carried a growing human toll, while the deadly Utah-Colorado wildfire underscored how extreme weather and emergency response are becoming daily front-page concerns. In U.S. politics, Vance’s Watergate comments and the broader imperial-presidency debate showed how old questions about power, accountability and democracy are again becoming urgent.
